Chinese Medicine for Headaches & Migraines

Chinese Medicine has been used to effectively treat headaches for centuries. Acupuncture is the most common form of treatment, but herbs, gua sha, cupping, and lifestyle changes can also be used. For the treatment of headaches, TCM has several options depending on the particular etiology of the headache.

TREATING TENSION HEADACHES

Tension headaches are usually stress-related and can be caused by muscular tension in the neck, shoulders, or jaw. For these types of headaches, both acupuncture needles and gua sha can be used to unbind muscle knots and relieve tension. Cupping may also be used to help release tight muscles. In addition to physical treatments, Chinese Medicine practitioners may also recommend lifestyle changes to help reduce stress and prevent future tension headaches.

MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Migraine headaches are often caused by imbalances in the digestive system. Chinese Medicine treatment for migraines typically includes acupuncture, herbs, and dietary changes. Acupuncture is used to stimulate energy flow and relieve pain. Herbs are used to support the digestive system and correct any imbalances. Dietary changes may be recommended to eliminate trigger foods and improve overall health. Chinese Medicine can be an effective way to treat migraines and prevent future headaches.
